FLEET PhD Write-Up Scholarships

In an acknowledgement of the impact the Covid-19 pandemic has had on the progress of our PhD students, FLEET is offering “write-up scholarships” for up to 3 months for students affected by the restrictions imposed in response to Covid-19. The purpose of these scholarships is to help support students to continue writing-up papers and/or finishing projects related to FLEET goals after submitting their PhD and waiting for examiners.

The scholarship will be paid at 50% of the RTPS rate from the central fund, with the expectation that the supervisor will contribute the other 50%. Applications will be assessed monthly against the following criteria: impact of Covid-19 restrictions, research is related to FLEET goals, support of supervisor.

Open now till the end of June 2024. Full guidelines and application form can be found at: fleet.org.au/equity/write-up-scholarship

FLEET Carer’s Grant

Always accepting applications. The Centre recognises that members with caring / family responsibilities face inequitable hurdles to participating in professional activities such as attending a conference or workshop. Applications can be submitted anytime. A maximum of $2,000 can be offered to all FLEET members with family/caring responsibilities. Example of support can include, but not limited to:

  • Travel expenses for depending children / carer to come with you
  • Costs associated with alternative arrangement for childcare / care-at-home while you are away

Full guidelines and application form can be found at: fleet.org.au/equity/fleet-carers-grant

FLEET outreach demonstration grants

FLEET members at each node are invited to develop ideas to construct an interactive demonstration to help explain the value of and spark dialogue about an aspect of their research. As a bonus, your time counts towards your obligatory FLEET outreach hours.

The most obvious example is our levitating superconductor, but your idea can be any scale, from small to grand. It could a new idea or repair/upgrade of an existing demonstration/activity. It could be an interactive gaming experience; something to help explain exciton-polaritons, use of optics/lasers to transform the state of 2D materials, topology and zero-resistance, or even a simpler, smaller version of the levitating superconductor.

So, pull a team together, brainstorm some ideas – think outside the box – and put a proposal together.

What we need

A short proposal (no more than one page) that outlines a description of what you intend to construct or develop and why, and that shows how you meet the criteria outlined below.

A budget: There is a budget of up to $1000 for each proposal. The budget only covers materials and outsourced technical and construction support such as what you might need from your institute’s Maker Space (or external equivalent).

Applications will be assessed by the FLEET outreach committee based on the following criteria:

Criteria

You must be a member of FLEET.

Link to FLEET science or your team’s research: The demonstration or activity should help explain an aspect of your research with a supporting narrative that has meaning for your intended audience (general public, school students, etc).

Target audience: Define your target audience(s) for your demonstration/activity.

Demonstrate the value of your idea: You should outline and provide some evidence for where and how the demonstration will be used and how it will help explain your science.

Send proposals to fleetoutreach@monash.edu
