Membership survey 2021

A comprehensive FLEET membership survey was conducted between 15 Feb and 3 Mar 2021 to gather feedback from FLEET students, postdocs, investigators as well as FLEET alums. Responses from 55% of membership has offered us strong insights into what works and what doesn’t in six different areas of Centre operations and initiatives. Huge thanks to everyone participated for your time and ideas on how we can do better as a Centre. View a two-page summary of the findings or read the full report of the survey results.

An external survey provider was contracted to implement the Membership Survey in order to maintain independence throughout the survey process and confidentiality of all responses. The Survey consists of six areas of feedback:

  • A. Centre Cohesion
  • B. Communication Channels
  • C. Professional Development and Training
  • D. Outreach
  • E. Culture, Diversity and Inclusion
  • F. COVID

All survey questions were assessed by respondents on an industry-standard climate survey Likert “agree/disagree” scale:

1=Strongly disagree 2=Disagree 3=Neutral 4=Agree 5=Strongly agree.

Key strengths of FLEET

The level of agreement (‘Agree’ or ‘Strongly agree’) for each question was aggregated to form the averages for the overall Areas of Feedback. Prioritised by highest levels of agreement first, highlighted strengths of FLEET are:

Culture, Diversity and Inclusion: Members in general believe that they are treated with respect at work and that FLEET fosters a diverse, inclusive and flexible working environment that is free from discrimination.

Centre Cohesion: Members are aware of the Centre’s objectives and believe that the FLEET Leadership teams are building a collaborative Centre where members share ideas and information, and open, honest communication is generally encouraged.

COVID: The majority of members agree that they have been supported by FLEET’s initiatives during COVID.
Professional Development and Training: Members agree that they would normally regularly attend workshops and conferences related to their roles and that they know where to access information about opportunities. They also believe that they can develop new skills within and outside of their technical areas.

Outreach: Members understand the importance of outreach and overall enjoy contributing to these activities.

Communication Channels: Members find the FLEET website and newsletters useful and are aware of
opportunities to promote their research.

key strengths of FLEET

When asked to state three key strengths of the Centre from their perspectives, the top five words members have used were
collaboration, research, people, diversity and communication. The size of words in the above wordcloud is proportional to the frequency of mention.

Member experience

An additional “Overall experience at FLEET” question was also included, which used an industry-standard Likert evaluation scale:
1=Poor 2=Fair 3=Average 4=Good 5=Excellent.

We’re delighted that 95% of members rated their experience as a member of FLEET as ‘Good’ or ‘Excellent’. We also received clear feedback on areas where FLEET can improve. Centre management and committees are working to implement your feedback in future initiatives and programs.

In addition to this comprehensive membership survey, FLEET also runs an annual Equity and Diversity survey in September to gain a better understanding of the quality and impact of current initiatives. Outside of these surveys, members can always provide feedback or raise any matter that needs FLEET management attention at the below form. This form is also available at the Member Portal via the intranet as well as FLEET KPI portal.
