FLEET Legacy Workshop

  •  29 Nov 2023 - 1 Dec 2023
     8:30 am - 5:00 pm

In February 2017, FLEET held its very first workshop at the Gold Coast with just 25 key investigators and its only staff member, the Chief Operating Officer, in attendance. This year 29 Nov – 1 Dec 2023, we are coming full circle back to the Gold Coast for the Centre’s legacy workshop, celebrating seven years of transformative innovation, capacity building and future STEM leaders development. The event will be attended by over 100 people and will be held at the Novotel Surfers Paradise.

We are excited to present a comprehensive three-day scientific program, featuring the active involvement of students, postdoctoral researchers, alumni, partners, advisors, and industry guests. Below, you will find detailed information about the program, offering an extensive array of activities to engage in, including:

– Over 40 captivating poster presentations
– 16 research highlights
– 6 thought-provoking research and industry presentations
– A compelling panel discussion featuring insights from our alumni
– Numerous opportunities to celebrate FLEET’s achievements and impactful outcomes.

Program Overview     Scientific Program
Booking flights:

It is recommended that members arrive on the evening of 28 November 2023 for a 9 AM start on Wednesday 29 November 2023. The workshop coincides with the busy end-of-year period and there will be many people travelling to the Gold Coast to enjoy the summer sun or attend the famous ‘Schoolies’ festivities. Booking airfares in advance is strongly recommended to reduce costs and secure flights that suit your preferences and the workshop schedule. Rooms at the Novotel will be available both before and after the event if this is better suited to your needs.

Transportation:

You should allow approx. 45 minutes to transfer from the Gold Coast Airport to Surfers Paradise. There is a selection of options, including bus, taxi & ride share. You can also travel by public transport from Brisbane airport to the Gold Coast but will need to allow more time. Please visit this page for more information.

A FLEET-organised coach transfer has been organised for this workshop, please get in touch with the FLEET Executive Officer for more information. Alternatively, it is advisable to coordinate flights with other attendees from the same node and look at group options to make the journey from the airport to the Novotel Surfers Paradise.

Families, partners and children:

Families are invited to all workshop social events. Upgrade costs for the family accommodation option and meals for children are subsidised by FLEET, members are responsible for the meals of accompanying partners. Please see associated costs in the “Centre affiliates” section below. We strongly encourage the participation of all members at the workshop, please consider the FLEET carers’ grant to enable you to attend in person.

An onsite creche will be available for parents who want to bring their children along. We will engage with a local childcare service provider to look after children during workshop hours. If you have any specific needs or queries about this, please get in touch with the FLEET Executive Officer.

Each day the childcare service will start 30 minutes before the programme and will conclude at the end of the formal program each day. We will organise a sign-in and sign-out sheet so that you can remove your child at any point during the day. Morning tea and lunch will be provided as part of the creche program. Children will need to be collected by parents for the lunch break to eat together in the onsite restaurant with the rest of the delegates. Please provide:
  • A run sheet of your child’s daily routine so that the nannies know when to feed/put to sleep, and how much milk to give if applicable
  • If medications need to be administered to your child throughout the day, please arrange your time to do this
