Leadership training

Four FLEET researchers have received partial Centre funding to attend Women & Leadership Australia Impact program:

  • PhD student Bianca Rae Fabricante (ANU)
  • PhD student Patjaree Aukarasereenont (RMIT)
  • Diversity in FLEET fellow Dr Mengting Zhao (Monash)
  • Research Fellow Dr Amelia Dominguez (Monash)

“FLEET’s strategic priorities include developing the next generation of science leaders, and fostering equity and diversity in STEM,” says FLEET Equity and Diversity Chair, Prof Jeff Davis. “Career and leadership support for women in FLEET works towards achieving both of these goals.”

PhD student Bianca Rae Fabricante (ANU)

“The WLA Impact Program will help me build leadership skills, necessary in my future research career, as well as helping develop my self-confidence and decision-making. I hope to improve my ability to present myself with confidence in the scientific community, trust myself to lead a research project in the future, and have confidence in everything that I do. And even if I am not fulfilling leadership roles right now or in the next 3 years, I will still find these skills an advantage since a good leader is a good team member as well.” Bianca Rae Fabricante (ANU)

PhD student Patjaree Aukarasereenont (RMIT)

“Leadership is the skill I always want to develop and improve. I am keen to get out of the comfort zone and boost my confidence. Participating in The WLA Impact Program will let me explore myself as a potential leader and have positive aspects towards myself. I aim to better understand my strengths, develop conflict-resolution skills, and improve my communication skills, with positive returns as a person and in my future career.” Patjaree Aukarasereenont (RMIT)

Diversity in FLEET fellow Dr Mengting Zhao (Monash)

“I believe the WLA Impact Program will help me improve my self-understanding, communication skills, and decision making so that I can work more efficiently in the future. And this will maximize my effort and energy and make me more productive so that I can finally have the opportunity to build up my career in science.” Dr Mengting Zhao (Monash)

Research Fellow Dr Amelia Dominguez (Monash)

“I aim to improve my confidence, time management skills and productivity, and I believe the WLA impact program is a perfect course for me to start improving all these leadership skills.” Dr Amelia Dominguez Celorrio (Monash)

WLA’s Impact program is aimed at women who wouldn’t necessarily consider themselves a leader or who aren’t in formal management positions. The 10-week program will build behavioural and interpersonal skills to enable better self-understanding, interpretation, and impact on others.

“We understand that it’s not every woman’s desire to be a leader or manager in the traditional sense; but experience teaches us that these core capabilities, that are fundamental to leadership, are actually vital regardless of your role or responsibility level.” Women in Leadership Australia.
