International Women’s Day: FLEET women blazing their own trail

FLEET is celebrating International Women’s Day, by profiling FLEET women at different stages of their research career. These women are forging a career path in physics, chemistry and engineering and making a strong point that there is a place in this space for women and diversity.

FLEET’s Equity and Diversity Committee Chair, Prof Jeff Davis says, “FLEET has a strategic priority to develop the next generation of science leaders, and foster equity and diversity in STEM. FLEET will provide an environment for our early-career women to thrive and progress, growing into capable and confident leaders.”

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is ‘Break The Bias’. We asked five FLEET women to share their experiences as researchers and women in STEM.

We asked each of the researchers profiled the following questions:

  1. 1.Reflecting on your own career path, experiences and hopes for the future, tell me your thoughts on the theme, ‘Break The Bias’?
  2. What gets you out of bed in the morning?

The experiences of each profiled FLEET researcher are different and it highlights that biases manifest in different forms. What is common for each of the FLEET women, however, is the cultural expectations of what women should do or be (or not be) – cultural expectations that need to shift if we are to break the bias.
