Guidelines for project updates: FLEET inaugural annual workshop

15 minute project brief (12 min talk + 3 min questions)

In this inaugural FLEET workshop, it’s important you pitch your talk so that most of the audience will understand most of the talk.

Please bear in mind that the majority of the audience won’t be familiar with your particular field. We have researchers from every Research Theme and Enabling Technology, and from a broad range of physics backgrounds.  Also note that there will be several students present, many of whom have only recently started their PhD, or have only completed honours.

Below we have suggested time allocations for each section in brackets.

  • Start by putting the work in the context of FLEET’s research theme/enabling technology
    (5 mins)
  • What do you hope to find / what could be challenges / results so far (5 mins)
  • Finish with “what’s next” (2 mins)
  • Leave 3 minutes for questions at the end.

You will have access to a data projector: please bring a laptop with HDMI (preferred) and/or VGA output, or bring your PowerPoint presentation on a USB key.

If you will be using a Mac, contact Errol.

The usual guidelines to presenting apply: eg

  • Check that any animations/sound files work in advance
  • Talk through your graphs / figures
  • Bring a backup on USB key
  • After someone asks a question, repeat/clarify it for the audience before answering.

Presenters need to ensure their talk is working prior to the session starting.

We strongly advise you to practice your talk, not only with your CI, but also with a FLEET colleague from another research theme, and ask them what didn’t make sense.

For those with only a single CI at the node (UQ and UOW) or who don’t know anyone from another theme, contact Errol and he’ll ‘pair you up’ with someone on phone or skype.

This need only take 30 minutes including feedback, but will help ensure maximum value for everyone at the workshop.
