IP Seminar with Dr Michael Harvey

  •  11 Aug 2022
     11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Event information:

Intellectual property (IP) describes any product created through the exertion of your mind and knowledge. IP protection and the rules surrounding this are topics that can seem confusing, opaque, and arbitrary to many scientists. This seminar provides a high-level introduction to IP and discusses how IP is protected in Australia, with some mention of the global rules. Patents are particularly relevant to researchers and workers in deep tech fields like Physics.

This seminar will include:
– an overview of patents and the rules surrounding what is patentable and the criteria for patentability, the risks of prior disclosure
– the general structure of a patent and the most common patenting pathways at Australian universities
– why managing IP is important for startup founders.

Clare Birch – an Investments Associate and Scientist in Residence at Blackbird. She was previously the first employee and Programs Coordinator at DeadlyScience, an Australian nonprofit that provides STEM learning resources to remote and Indigenous communities. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Advanced) with Honours and the University Medal in chemistry from the University of Sydney in 2020 and was well on the path to taking up a PhD before being diverted into startups, and hasn’t looked back.

Dr Michael Harvey – FLEET’s Translation Program manager. Michael helps FLEET members to identify promising research for translation and assists with the process of developing projects ready for commercialisation, industry partnerships, or other impacts. Michael has a PhD in physics and spent the last 17 years founding and running deep tech and materials science startups. If you’re interested in translating your research, entrepreneurship and startups, or just curious about the commercialisation process come along and chat with Michael.
