Coloured Light

What colour do you get when you combine red, green and blue light?

What you need:

  • 3x torches
  • 3x rubber bands
  • red, green and blue cellophane
  • a dark room

What to do:

  1. Put each of the colours of cellophane over each of the torches and secure it them with rubber bands.
  2. Turn out the lights and shine each of the colours onto a blank wall.
  3. Overlap the three colours together. What colour do you get?
  4. Try overlapping the red and green, blue and green, and blue and red. What colours do you get?

What happens:

Red, blue and green are the primary colours of light. When you combine them together, you get white light. White light makes up all colours and can be split into the colours of the rainbow.
