Innovate

FLEET is pursuing the following research themes to develop systems in which electrical current can flow with near-zero resistance:

The above approaches are enabled by the following technologies:

The Vision

FLEET will develop new systems in which electricity can flow with minimal resistance and dissipation of heat, and to develop devices in which the dissipationless electric current can be switched on and off at will.

These devices will enable revolutionary new electronics and communications technologies with ultra-low power consumption.

Fleet Research

FLEET brings together world-leading experts to develop a new generation of ultralow power devices following three complementary strategies. Electronic transport can be protected from dissipation by: topology (a unique property of the electrons in specially engineered materials), superfluidity (the flow of carriers without resistance) or by engineering new, non-equilibrium states. These three approaches are based on the demonstrated research excellence of the team of Australian and international investigators.

Our approaches sit at the very boundaries of what is possible in modern condensed matter physics and nanotechnology. To ensure the success of the program, FLEET will have two cross-cutting Enabling Technology Themes to develop the materials and device infrastructure necessary to carry out the research. The three research themes depend crucially on the synthesis of novel and atomically-thin materials, and the development of new nano-fabrication techniques to incorporate atomically-thin materials into device structures.
